Don't gain weight when you travel

Hello Roadwarriors. I am going to cut and paste an article provided by Yahoo that has some great suggestions for staying fit while on the road:

Going on vacation can be fun (or stressful, depending on your family), but it's usually hard to stick to a normal exercise routine when your schedule is not your own. Add to that the heaping portions, party noshes and steady stream of sweets that come with the holiday season and—bummer—the needle on the scale moves in the wrong direction! It might seem unavoidable (after all, you can't tell your in-laws you won't be visiting because you don't want to miss your favorite Spin class), but the good news is, we can stay fit or even shed pounds when we're on the road with a little advance planning. Here are SELF's favorite ways to sneak in a workout whatever your exercise style or traveling scenario.

If your travel schedule's tightBe active early, suggests Pauline Frommer, creator of the Pauline Frommer Travel guidebooks. "I get out of bed and do an activity that's related to where I am, such as taking a walk on a beach, riding a bike around town or hiking in the hills. If I don't go first thing, I often get too busy." Find a local activity you love and do it before your hosts or travel companions are up and at 'em.

If you're a gymgoerMost hotels now have gyms on site, but if yours doesn't—or if it's small, packed or closed when you're ready to work up a sweat—check the TV channels in your room instead. You can now access ExerciseTV's free on-demand workout videos at several chains, including Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and Starwood Hotels. No luck? Quiz the concierge about fitness classes or free passes to a nearby gym. If you're staying with family or friends, ask if you can piggyback on a gym membership or pay a daily fee at their local spot.

If you're a runnerOne of the best things about running is you can do it practically anywhere. But when you're in a new-to-you area, it's hard to know which way to turn, so consider hooking up with a local running group that can you show you the way. Westin hotels offer group runs and a running concierge to take you on a safe, scenic route (a program they call RunWestin). Or click on Store.Nike.com to find free weekly runs that meet at 12 Niketowns nationwide. Want to venture out on your own? Locate easy-to-navigate routes at MapMyRun.com by entering the address where you're staying and seeing what pops up. Or skip the tour bus and visit CityRunningTours.com for paths that let you sightsee while you sweat.

If you're a pedal pusherAccess to wheels could be as close as your host's garage—it can't hurt to ask if you can borrow a bike!—and some bed and breakfast inns and hotels (like the Fairmont chain) lend them out. If not, reserve a bike at RentABikeNow.com, which has locations throughout much of the United States, then choose a Spinning destination and enter it at Maps.Google.com/biking to map a bike-friendly route anywhere. And remember: Always wear a helmet!

If you're outdoorsyNo snow on the ground where you are? Take advantage of the wide open outdoors by walking, hiking or biking a local trail. Find one at Trails.com or TrailLink.com. Snow bunnies can snag some runs and score cool deals at SkiResorts.com.

If your room is your only refugeTry these moves. Craig Friedman of Phoenix, director of the Performance Innovation Team for Core Performance training systems and cocreator of the Sheraton Fitness workout program, designed them exclusively for SELF. All you need is a resistance band (pack one before you leave home, or order one for $6 from Spri.com) and a pair of gliding disks ($17; Spri.com) or even just two paper plates. Do three sets of each move before you open your door in the morning, or steal away midday to tone up pronto in privacy.

I could write a book of excuses....but this pretty much disolves most of them!!

  1. Thanks for the shout out. I wanted to mention that a new feature on MapMyRUN is our integration with geo tagged photos on Flikr. If you have our iMapMyRUN+ mobile app you can shoot your own pics, auto tagging them, to the route.

Happy travels. Stop in and see us if you make to Austin or Denver.

    Cheers,
