Winter Travel & Safety
I have been in traveling sales for a number of years and the Department of Transportation does a great job keeping the major roads cleared - but NEVER take a chance. If you're having any issues with control or vision of the road GET OFF and find a hotel. GPS's make this so easy because it can help you locate businesses near by from restaurants to hotels. You do not want to have an accident.
Second....ALWAYS ALWAYS travel with a cell phone. I find it hard to believe, but some people don't have one. In this case, buy a 'burner'.....throw away phone. Have it fully charged and available. Cell phones are set up to dial 1 and this will call the state police from where ever you are.
But one should also be prepared for over the road travel. I went to http://www.roadandtravel.com/carcare/winterkit.htm and found a list of safety items you should carry with you when traveling:
..."So what does one need in their emergency winter car kit? According to Jim Rink, my trusty source at AAA, these are the items every motorist should have stashed in his or her car:
flashlight
flares or reflective triangle
distress sign
telephone charger
first aid supplies
basic tools
a fully charged cell phone
Other recommended items are:
boots
hat
coat
gloves
jumper cables
carpet strips, sand or kitty litter for traction
ice scraper and brush
blanket
chocolate candy (my favorite part)
As I initially perused this list last November, I realized how unprepared I would be if I were to ever have car trouble in the winter. I had an ice brush with a built-in scraper that really doesn't work that well. That's it. As nice as my ice brush is, it most definitely wouldn't be able to keep me warm or help me out in case of an emergency."...
I would suggest a tin can and a couple of candles. In the worst of situations you can melt water in a can plus candles can put out a small amount of warmth. I've also picked up a childs snow shovel, which is small and fits easily in the trunk.
And when you see a lot of collective lights and flashing beacons and there seems to be a snow cloud right there? For crying out loud, it's probably a DOT snow plow. Stay out of their way.........
AND always......BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!!
