Rachel Ray suggestions for eating on a plane

I found a really interesting article on foods that travel well and can be consumed on a plane:

WHAT NOT TO PACK:
Skip snacks with strong smells....fish, hard-boiled eggs and pungent curries. Also steer clear of messy foods: splatter prone spaghetti with red sauce or an oversize burrito. Whatever you bring, take extra napkins (or even carry a small towel).

Airline BreakFAST:
If you're taking an early flight, bring a packet of instant oatmeal, a bag of slivered almonds and dried cranberries, and a spoon. Just ask the flight attendant for hot water and you've got a hearty, healthy meal.

Snacks:
Create your own meze platter with veggie sticks (we like carrot, cucumber, zucchini and jicama), pickles, sliced pita bread, and a tub of hummus spiked with hot sauce, paprika and a drizzle of olive oil.

Assemble a cheese plate with one hard cheese and one soft (and a plastic knife for spreading), olives, dried cherries, walnuts and water crackers.

Layered bean dip, guacamole, salsa and shredded cheese in a to-go container. Bring chips. If you have time, make healthy ones by brushing olive oil on a tortilla slices and baking at 350* for 10 minutes.

Charlie's NOTES:
I carry high fiber bars, fruit (like apples and grapes), cheese, chips, pretzels, and dried fruits. I also carry my own instant oatmeal - enough for the duration of the trip. You can make oatmeal in one of the hotel rooms coffee cups with hot water from a coffee pot. I carry a couple of the bars in my carry on and the rest in a gallon size zip-lock baggy in my case. This will save you money and give you something other then the carb fest offered by most hotels. I even carry my favorite powered creamer to add to my coffee.

Check your grocery store. There are a number of packaged foods that will work. Hummus and crackers, string cheese, Baby Bell cheeses, Happy Cow cheese spreads, Lunchables, bit size turkey or sausage bits. Check the lunch foods sections. There are plenty of small serving single package ideas.

JUST remember you can NOT take any liquids in your carry on's, through security. BUT they are ok in checked luggage. Think about it and let me know if you have any suggestions.

  1. My favorite travel snack (on flights or by car) is a trail mix. A combination of any of the following: Almonds, walnuts, peanuts, raisins, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkins seeds =)
