The Danish Community of Elk Horn Iowa
I have to share this little bit of American heartland with you. Drive across I80 to the west of Des Moines and turn north on road 173. Seven miles north of the freeway is this wonderful little town nestled in the soft rolling hills of Iowa.
Elk Horn is advertises as a Danish community. http://www.elkhorniowa.com/pdf/town_brochure.pdf There is a windmill and a great little home cooked food, restaurant called The Danish Inn. All the food and salads are handmade. They had a small buffet complete with brown trays. The buffet had stuffed pork, pan fried fish, real mashed potatoes, Danish style Swedish meatballs, steamed veggies and the BEST sweet and sour red cabbage I've ever had. They offer a small standard salad bar that included jello salad, pea/cheese/egg salad and of course, Wisconsin cheese soup.
Along with this $9 dinner is the offer of Danish layer cake or rice pudding. I opted for the rice pudding which comes adorned with marchino cherries.
After supper, I drove north out of town to Kimballton....which if at all possible, was smaller and just as pretty.
