Now and again, when the weather permits, I travel with my four pound Chihuahua Pixie. There are a number of ways to make this safe and easy. ALWAYS keep in mind the temperature in the car, should you leave your dog while shopping or whatever. Too cold is as bad as too hot. ALWAYS crack the windows. ALWAYS leave water available.
http://www.officialpethotels.com/?src_aid=g-worldwide Is the site I use to locate hotels that allow dogs. Don't just assume. Many don't or have an 'upgrade' fee to have your dog in your room. So check. Since I have 'memberships' with most hotel chains, I use this site to find the hotel and address that works and then go to the hotel site to make the reservation.
Next is how to travel with your buddy. Mine prefers to ride in my lap. Although she's small and doesn't bother the steering wheel, there are a couple of reasons this is not a good idea. If you have to hit the breaks that dog is going to fly off my lap. And....the cops don't like it much. I hear rumor that the law is going to start cracking down on unrestrained dogs in moving vehicles. So there are these great little booster/safety seats:
Pixie likes hers. There is also a short leash that you can attach to the dog's collar/harness to keep them in the seat. I got mine at www.petsmart.com
I also have this great water bottle I found years ago. Its a plastic bottle with a troth attached to the screw cap. Fill the bottle, screw on the top and collapse the troth to the bottle. When water is needed, turn the bottle upside down, squeeze allowing water to flow into the troth. How cool is THAT?
There are alot of great travel tools available at your local pet stores. So check them out. Be safe and keep your buddies safe as well.
